Imagine this. Your mind is trapped in the past. The present is filled with immediate thoughts that you can’t decipher. The future looks far and bleak due to your inability to wrap your head around the right now. These are just some of the trials brought up in the new film The Music Never Stopped. As a father tries to make up for time lost, his son is battling a brain tumor and the inability to differentiate past from present. One father hopes that the universal language of music will be enough to finally shatter the negative images of the past and be the missing link towards the future.
Take a break from the life of the Superhero this movie season and dive into the catalog of The Grateful Dead, played throughout the film, and the sometimes complicated relationship between father and son.
They come. They invade. And then all hell breaks loose. That’s the formula, but few films seem to get it right. Will Smith did it best in Independence Day and Tom Cruise was our favorite runner up as he fought off aliens in the War of the Worlds. Next up, Battle: Los Angeles. While comic book fans were patiently waiting to see what villains Batman, The Green Lantern and Captain America would be fighting away, Sony heads were gearing up to thrill audiences again with another bang-bang-shoot-up-the-alien-and-win-the-weekend-box-office feature.
It might sound like the same old recycled concept that has excited young moviegoers and annoyed film critics for years, but Battle: Los Angeles might just serve up the goods. Instead of jumping on the 3D band wagon, film makers decided to concentrate on documentary style filming that will truly put you in the direct line of fire. Check out the trailer below.
Your Facebook page might have listed a quote similar to this during last year’s run of Iron Man 2. While the actual film was getting mixed reviews from fans, the startling revelation that the film’s closing scene offered was enough to generate interest in an entirely different upcoming release.
What would it be? Another Captain America suit accessory? Maybe a hint at the new Avengers film that was speculated to be in pre-production? As the camera panned over a huge whole in the middle of the New Mexico dessert, a large hammer was quickly shown and the next big budget blockbuster from Marvel Studios was revealed.
Thor is set to hit theaters this May. Although early buzz has helped keep The Dark Knight, Superman and even the Transformers trending topics, the first theatrical trailer for Thor finally gave comic fans everywhere a first glimpse at the special effects, punch lines and explosions that are being offered up by this year’s Superhero underdog. If all goes well, everyone might just be carrying around plastic hammers for Halloween. If the movie is as good as the trailer, Thor might also add himself to a long list of crime fighters and protectors of Planet Earth that have easily become household names.
Will the film be enough to pack theaters and bring around numerous sequels that pale in comparison to the original? Only time, and the box office, will tell.
Kickstarting a new trilogy on June 3rd, X-Men: First Class brings the X-Men movie series back to the very beginning, when Professor X and Magneto discovered their powers together as close friends. The film promises to revitalize the series with a whole new cast and costumes closers to the iconic designs from the original comics. The villains, the enigmatic Hellfire Club, are all new to the film universe as well. The Hellfire Club is packed with evil mutants and is akin to the Illuminati conspiracy, with the Hellfire Club serving as a new world order to push the evil mutant agenda. This means we can look forward to some great mutant vs. mutant combat as well as see a side of the X-Men plot that has yet to be shown in the film universe. We can also look forward to seeing some of the classic X-Men in action, giving screentime to overlooked mutants like Banshee and Havok. The timeline of X-Men First Class predates many of the familiar characters that would come later like Wolverine and Storm, thus new X-Men fans will get to see a side of the series they’ve never seen before.
Unfortunately, we have yet to see substantial footage of the film in action, with only a brief trailer released so far. From bits and pieces, we can see fan-favorite Beast back in action and Emma Frost/White Queen, who was one of the most dangerous villains in the X-Men series. Though it’s hard to say just how the film will turn out from the brief teasers we’ve gotten so far, the nostalgia of a cast of classic X-Men figures should keep fans satisfied and awaiting the next two parts of this new trilogy. We’ll miss Patrick Stewart as Professor X, now seemingly synonymous with the role, but look forward to seeing where the younger James McAvoy will take him. Be sure to keep an eye out for new X-Men: First Class press releases and wait eagerly along with us as the X-Men franchise is reborn.
Get excited about the new film with some cool X-Men apparel.
Hollywood is getting ready to heat up movie theaters starting this Spring. After the success of Iron Man and the Dark Knight, studio heads are banking on seeing the same high numbers at the box office throughout 2011. Not only have they green-lit new films, but they’ve also lined up numerous sequels months before the first weekend results. Get excited about the upcoming movie season by checking out our favorites.
X-Men First Class
What’s been revealed: It’s a prequel. Instead of continuing on with the the major plot twists of X Men 3, developers decided to revamp the entire story. The film will revisit the days when Magneto and Professor X were young boys who actually got along.
Mid Term Grade: B+ After waiting months for actual footage, fans were finally given a teaser trailer on Facebook that still left much to be desired.
Transformers 3
What’s been revealed: Although details of the plot are still under wraps, the cool visuals and adrenaline rushing stunts displayed during the Super Bowl spot were enough to keep this film a hot trending topic. Hopefully the action will be enough to make up for the beautiful Megan Fox not being in the film.
Mid-Term Grade: A+ This might be the film to beat. What superhero can possibly match a ripped Tyrese, robotic cars and the budget of Michael Bay?
Scre4m
What’s been revealed: It’s not all about the superhero this season. Female protagonist Sydney Prescott returns to Woodsboro once again to face Ghostface. The main victims also return with a whole new crop of teenagers to face the dreaded phone call. Dimension has already signed on for the fifth and sixth installments of the popular horror franchise.
Mid Term Grade: C+ Re-shoots and bad trailer reviews have already haunted the new film. Only time will tell if the crazy antics of Ghostface will keep us Screaming or asking for a refund.
Rocking for over 35 years, Rush is one of the formative influences on the progressive rock genre and continues to produce new material, with the new album “Clockwork Angels” on the horizon. Rush extended their unprecedented Time Machine Tour through 2011, playing the complete fan-favorite Moving Pictures album for the first time. For new initiates, this tour serves as a career retrospective and is the perfect chance to see what some dub “The Holy Trinity” of rock and roll. Rush shows are world-famous for unrivaled musicianship and frantic live energy, as well as Neil Peart’s unforgettable drum solos, which have inspired hopefuls the world over.
For those who have followed the Working Man from the temples of 2112 to the swirling synth of Signals and beyond, Rush’s status as Rock Gods is well cemented and inarguable. Rush’s appeal stems from their constant diversity and ever-changing approach to the rock format. For over thirty five years the band has experimented with virtually every genre and boasts lyrical themes that skew all the way from sci-fi fantasy to faith and philosophy. Each Rush album brings it’s own reinvention to the Rush sound, inspiring plenty of debate to keep fans busy. For newbies looking at a sprawling catalogue of 19+ albums, each bringing it’s own unique sound and sensibility to the table, it’s hard to know where to start.
Many would recommend 2112, considered by most fans to be the definitive introduction to the band. The title track goes above and beyond it’s musical peers, depicting a Ayn Rand-inspired dystopia where self expression is outlawed and an ancient artifact, the acoustic guitar, is reintroduced into society and destroyed by the world’s oppressive leaders. The energetic defiance of fighting back against the conspiracy shines through, with this album considered the peak of Rush’s finest era by many fans. Some would also say the same about Moving Pictures, which gave us the smash hits “Tom Sawyer” and “Limelight” and stripped down the band’s sound to be tighter and more accessible to music fans of all genres. The ongoing Time Machine tour pays tribute to Moving Pictures for a reason, as it is arguably when Rush exploded into the worldwide mainstream and became the rock juggernaut it is today. Once you’ve found a starting point, Rush’s massive body of work can keep you busy for a lifetime. Even more impressively, with the exception of the very first album, the band has boasted the same three-man lineup for the entirety of their career. This gives them an unrivaled group cohesion and work ethic that results in one of the best live shows in the world and ensures the band constantly keeps moving forwards, always giving diehard fans something to anticipate.
So what are you waiting for? Crank the volume up to eleven until the meek inherit the earth and there’ll be no looking back. Be sure to check out Rush’s ongoing and unprecedented Time Machine Tour while you have the chance, and show the crowd where you came from with our collection of Rush t-shirts, depicting the standout albums in the Rush catalogue.
It’s been almost three years since The Dark Knight took over theaters and kicked the corny out of the Superhero film. After an Oscar worthy performance from the late Heath Ledger, high acclaim from film critics and over $1 billion in worldwide revenue, it was a no-brainier for the studio to go ahead with a third film in the series. News has been slow, but finally one major character was revealed: Catwoman. After months of speculation, it was revealed that Anne Hathaway will hopefully be suiting up in the famous iconic suit.
Christopher Nolan has made sure that his inception of Batman is far from the cartoonish films of the 90s. Although we still don’t know whether Hathaway will be playing the outrageous Cat or the modest Selena Kyle or, as many fans hope, truly show the transformation and play both characters, fans of the film are patiently waiting for the films release, or at least some more leaks.
How does Hathaway stack up against other famous women who took on the role of Catwoman?
Eartha Kitt
That voice was made for this role. Every line that she spoke during the television series seemed to sound like a small and seductive purr. We can only hope that Hathaway is able to bring some of the same charisma that Kitt was able to display on the small screen.
“Honey I’m home! Oh I forgot. I’m not married.”
Many might agree that Michele Pfeiffer is the Cat to beat. The red lipstick, the painted on costume, the long whip. Her portrayal of the character seemed to be ripped right out of the comic book. Not only was she convincing in the role of Catwoman, but she also had the vulnerability needed to play the coy and meek Selena Kyle as well.
Halle Berry
This film probably won’t be listed on Halle Berry’s long list of accomplishments. Once images first emerged of her online with a leather bra and destroyed leather pants, fans were already calling the film a disaster. Everything from the music to the script was wrong. Although the title character was unnoticeable, Berry was extremely convincing in the role of Patience Phillips—the shy employee who apparently had to undergo a name change for the “landmark” film.
Don’t count Anne Hathaway out just yet. She didn’t earn an Oscar nomination for her dark turn in “Rachel Getting Married” for nothing. She just might have the goods to truly fade to black in the Dark Knight Rises. Only time will tell.
